I’ve torn my ACL…what happens now?
Let me introduce you to Billy (not a real person).
Billy had injured his knee playing sport. He fell to the ground, heard a pop, and was unable to walk from the pitch. It swelled instantly and has been painful ever since.
Billy saw his GP who referred him for an MRI. The MRI confirmed an ACL tear. The GP has now referred Billy to an Orthopaedic Surgeon for a surgical consults who then schedules him for ACL reconstruction surgery.
Whilst Billy waits for his surgery what should he do?
a.) Protect the knee by not moving it and not exercising it. Don’t see a physio until AFTER the surgery.
OR
b.) be proactive and start physio ASAP to achieve a quiet knee and make sure he heads into surgery with full range of motion at the knee, strong quads, and a detailed game plan for the first few days post surgery,
You have probably guessed the answer by now - it is B!!!
The evidence is clear - PREHAB leads to better outcomes and recovery following ACL surgery. Prehab is rehab prior to your surgery.
If you want the best possible outcome following your ACL surgery starting physio as soon as possible BEFORE your operation is vital.
